What is A School Library Advisory Council (SLAC)
A School Library Advisory Council (SLAC) is a group established by the Board of Trustees to serve at the district level. Members of the SLAC are drawn from various areas of the community and from within the school district. A majority of the voting members must be parents of students enrolled in the district who are not employed by the district. Members of the School Library Advisory Council may include parents, community members, librarians, classroom teachers, school counselors, and administrators. SLACs are required to meet at least two times each year, and may hold additional meetings as necessary to fulfill their duties.
SLACs assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in each school library catalog and in the acquisition of library materials. SLACs play an important role in strengthening the connection between library resources, literacy development, and learning. They can help parents and community stakeholders reinforce the knowledge and skills children need to support student achievement, literacy development, and foster lifelong learning.
